AI Vision Statement

At Hiesab, our vision for AI is driven by our commitment to innovation and efficiency. We believe that the AI industry has become overly reliant on sheer computing power to create more capable models, often at the expense of developing more efficient algorithms. Our focus is on crafting intelligent systems that prioritize resource efficiency. Therefore, we redefine intelligence not merely as the ability of machines to simulate human intelligence but as the ability to do so using minimal resources. For us, intelligence is demonstrated by a machine's capability to achieve accurate outcomes while consuming the least possible data and computing power. In this way, a machine that reaches the correct answer faster with fewer resources is inherently more intelligent than one that requires more. By championing efficiency and innovation, we aim to push the boundaries of what AI can achieve, fostering the development of smarter, more sustainable technologies that benefit society as a whole.

Our View on AI and AGI

We do not subscribe to the hype surrounding AI where the term is often misused for marketing purposes. Our vision centers on making intelligent decisions through the use of specialized machine learning models that work together to optimize specific processes. We engineer these processes together in a central structure to develop intelligent systems. By automating intelligent decision-making for particular tasks within these systems, we still refer to our approach as AI, or more specifically Weak (or narrow) AI. However, it is essential to distinguish this from Strong AI, also known as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), where the goal is to create machines with the ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge in a way that is indistinguishable from human intelligence. Our focus remains on task-specific intelligence, ensuring practical and efficient solutions rather than pursuing the broader, more generalized aspirations of AGI. However, AGI will still be a research topic for us, as we explore the potential and boundaries of intelligent systems.

Our View on Generative AI

We see generative AI as a means to create intelligent machines that collaborate closely with humans to boost productivity and efficiency. We are not only embracing a culture of working alongside intelligent machines but also aiming to develop them in a way that blends efficiency with innovation.

Our View on AI Risks

We understand that AI, like many other technologies, has dual-use potential. However, we believe that the benefits of AI significantly outweigh the risks in many fields such as healthcare, science, and education. Therefore, we focus on harnessing the positive applications of AI while ensuring that risks are addressed and more importantly minimized or eliminated whenever possible.

Our View on AI Regulations

We believe that AI regulations should follow, rather than precede, AI innovations. Just as doctors treat patients after diagnosing an illness, AI regulations should be implemented after identifying and understanding the associated AI risks. This approach allows for the identification and addressing of actual legal gaps, avoiding the pitfalls of unnecessary regulations that could stifle innovation. Premature regulations based on hypothetical problems can create barriers and hinder progress. Moreover, unfounded AI risks could be exploited to manipulate public opinion, resulting in legislation that benefits new businesses based on these exaggerated risks, potentially leading to exploitation and corruption. Having only regulations or only innovations is detrimental to society. Therefore, we advocate for an approach where innovations are balanced by regulations as a following step (and not vice versa), ultimately benefiting society as a whole. We are committed to collaborating with legislative and executive bodies to transparently clarify these risks.

Collaboration and Education

We seek to make knowledge accessible and to provide innovative, efficient, and specialized solutions and tools to be a central-unified platform for both industry and education where technological progress is standardized, organized, and redistributed with an objective to accelerate research and development and to offer a high-quality educational material with hands-on tutorials on a wide range of topics.

Throughout our platform, we aim to form specialized collaboration pools by bringing together researchers, developers, and enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds to work on specific problems. A large enough pool of collaboration with universities, companies, and developers will be utilized to provide not only a better education but also accelerated technological progress. Research outcomes will be used to update our tools which are then made available to universities to continue the development cycle. These tools then can be used in lectures to give students hands-on training and also to use them in their research or theses. Companies with collaboration or sponsorship status will have the advantage of commercial-use of our open source tools, so they can directly make use of these new breakthroughs.

Name and Logo

Our name is inspired by the Arabic word "حساب" (Hiesab) which means computation and calculation. Our logo refers to the sun and the moon, which are two celestial bodies that have many benefits, including knowing and computing the time. In our logo, the sun and the moon refer to balance and harmony, representing the duality of light and darkness, day and night, and the cyclical nature of time. The logo is designed to reflect our commitment to precision, efficiency, and innovation in everything we do. By combining the sun and the moon in our logo, صe aim to convey the idea of balance and harmony in our work and drive the wheel of progress and innovation to ambitious horizons continuously.

Inspiration

We draw our inspiration from the rich history of scientific discovery and technological innovation during The Islamic Golden Age (8th to 13th centuries) when scholars and scientists in the Islamic world made significant contributions to various fields of knowledge, including mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and engineering. This period started at the time of Harun al-Rashid who established House of Wisdom in the late 8th century in Iraq which later emerged as the most advanced scientific center in the world. Deeply inspired by the holy book of Quran and by embracing the spirit of curiosity, inquiry, and collaboration that characterized the Islamic Golden Age, scholars from the Islamic world developed advanced mathematical techniques, astronomical instruments, and medical treatments that laid the foundation for modern science and technology. We aim to build on this legacy and contribute to the advancement of science, technology, and innovation in the 21st century. Just like The Islamic Golden Age, our work is deeply inspired by the holy Quran starting from verses that refer to proportions in everything such as: "Indeed, all things We created with a proportion" (Al-Qamar 49) and verses that refer to balancing such as: "And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance" (Al-Rahman 9). Here we can highlight two important physical and mathematical concepts as follows:

  • The first verse refers to the physical concept of consistency where everything including natural phenomena such as fluid flow or heat flow actually have precise and defined proportions whether we know it (i.e. deterministic) or not (i.e. stochastic relative to us). In fact, Quran mentions that natural phenomena such as the orbital movement of the sun, the moon, and the earth are made consistent to allow humans learn numbers and computing (or calculation) including computing time and other things that are useful in our life - "It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for it phases - that you may know the number of years and computing. Allah has not created this except in truth. He details the signs for a people who know" (Yunus 5), also "And it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming" (Al-Anbeyaa 33). Certainly, calculable natural phenomena are proofed to follow consistent patterns which can be expressed by physical laws in form of mathematical equations that can be computed. Differential equations are a perfect example for such cases where the system is expressed in proportions as rates of change in derivative terms.

  • The second verse highlights the indispensable mathematical concept of balancing and equality in transactions which is repeatedly mentioned in the Holy Quran on several occasions. Interestingly, this exact same mathematical concept is behind the extraordinary work of Al-Khwarizmi (Algorithm is named after him which is based on the Latin version of his name) for laying down the fundamentals of Algebra in the 9th century during the Islamic Golden Age where the word algebra is an Arabic word Al-Jabr that refers to balancing. Using this concept, Al-Khwarizmi was the first to write algebraic equations with which arithmetic equations can be solved. He developed this method until he wrote its steps for solving quadratic equations, so this process was known by his name, "algorithms" (i.e. latin translation of his name). We see Al-Khwarizmi's contributions as the key to all modern science that still affect us till this day including the revolution of AI where Linear Algebra and algorithms are playing a central essential role in developing machine learning models.

One example from the Islamic Golden Age is that around the 11th century, Al-Biruni was able to estimate the radius of earth as 6339.6 km which is remarkably close to the modern value of 6371 km with an error percentage less than 0.5%. A better estimate came only after more than 600 years around the 17th century made by Isaac Newton and other scientists of that era. Considering the knowledge and tools that are available for Al-Biruni in the 11th century, this shows why this period was called the Golden Age of Islam. Remarkably, following the recommendations mentioned in the Holy Quran, Harun al-Rashid was able to make the general trend towards reaching accuracy and control in the calculations to achieve justice in governance and all transactions.

While we take the Islamic Golden Age as reference example for scientific discovery and technological innovation, it is important to recognize that the philosophical approach in religion known as Kalam that was introduced into Islam played a significant role in its decline. This approach was influenced by Greek and Indian philosophy, straying from and directly contradicting the foundational texts of the Quran and Hadith. Subsequently, these doctrines (e.g. Mu'tazilism) led to several Bid'ah (i.e. innovations in religion) such as: Quran is created instead of words of Allah, Allah is everywhere instead of above the sky above his throne, etc. These Bid'ah undermined the correct understanding of Islam which had been fundamental in the successes of the Islamic Golden Age at the beginning as founded by Harun al-Rashid. Consequently, the resulting confusion and ignorance paved the way for injustices and misguidance (e.g. Mihna) that led to this era's decline and afterwards to the destruction of the House of Wisdom by the Mongols in the 13th century (1258).

We see that computation (or in Arabic Hiesab) based on mathematics (including Algebra) where the principles of consistency and balancing are applied are the key to science and knowledge. For example, in the field of AI, the concept of consistency is reflected in the idea of reproducibility and reliability of results, while the concept of balancing is reflected in the idea of fairness and equity in AI systems. By embracing these principles, we aim to build a culture of precision, efficiency, and innovation that will enable us to make significant contributions to the advancement of science, technology, and society.

Thus, we are dedicated to upholding the values of consistency and balance, not only in our scientific endeavors but also in our commitment to our faith and the original teachings of Islam based on Quran, authentic Hadith of the prophet Muhammad blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, the path of all Prophets (and Messengers) blessings and peace be upon them, the Companions (Sahabah), righteous Predecessors, and Scholars of Islam. Shall Allah guide us in our mission, we would try to push the boundaries of our islamic communities to apply the same principles in their work and life, perhaps we can make a difference in the world by establishing right (truth) and justice for all humanity without any discrimination or racism in the light of Islam to facilitate for good governance (i.e. الحكم الرشيد), justice and accuracy in all transactions, as Harun al-Rashid did, may God have mercy on him.

We do not shy away from blending science and faith as we honestly see that they do not necessary contradict, rather both are about finding the truth. In our pursuit of knowledge and justice, we are open to working with people from all backgrounds. In fact, our religion of Islam commands us to be fair with all people even against ourselves and to treat them with justice and kindness. We see that justice is universal and key to peace and prosperity for all humanity.
